CHARGING AHEAD: The Future of Electric Vehicles In Singapore

As part of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the government is committed to achieving net-zero emissions, increasing our green spaces and energy-efficient buildings, and cultivating sustainable practices overall. A key strategy in achieving these goals is by encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles (EV).

Driving an EV significantly reduces our carbon footprint, cutting it by more than half compared to a similar petrol-powered car. EVs not only pollute less but are also quieter, contributing to a cleaner and more pleasant living environment. Transitioning into EV is no small feat, and requires both a mindshift and lifestyle adjustment, which is why the government is offering many incentives.

You’d be glad to know that the Electric Vehicle (EV) Early Adoption Incentive will be extended to Dec 31, 2025. From January 1 to December 31, 2024, owners registering fully electric cars and taxis will get a 45% rebate on the Additional Registration Fee, capped at S$15,000. Additionally, the Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) rebates will stay at S$25,000 for Band A1 cars and decrease to S$5,000 for Band A2 cars.

LOOKING FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES (EV) IN SINGAPORE?

What Are Electric Vehicles

In today’s world, EVs represent the cutting edge of automotive technology, and a status symbol for the tech-savvy and eco-friendly driver.

EVs are also more energy-efficient, converting a higher percentage of battery energy into propulsion. They tend to have lower operating costs since electricity is generally cheaper than petrol and fewer moving parts mean less maintenance.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are powered by electricity instead of traditional internal combustion engines that use fossil fuels. Types of EVs include fully electric vehicles, powered solely by batteries, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), which combine an electric motor with a gasoline engine. The key component of an EV is its rechargeable electric battery, which can be charged from external power sources like home or public charging stations. What’s more, EVs offer similar space and seating to their petrol counterparts.

What to Consider When Choosing an EV

Whether buying or leasing an EV, you should consider the following key factors before making a decision.

  • Range Anxiety: This concern involves the fear that the EV’s battery will deplete before reaching the destination or a charging point. The range of an EV varies by model, typically between 150KM and 400KM per charge. Hence, you should evaluate your daily travel distances, how far you drive or how long you commute, and for what purpose.

In Singapore, the average daily driving range for electric vehicle (EV) drivers is approximately 55KM.

EV charger stations include Mennekes (Type 2) chargers, which use AC for charging, and CCS2 chargers, which use DC for faster charging. Charging options are either private, like home chargers that use AC and take 4-8 hours for a full charge, or public, managed by licensed operators offering both AC (up to 22kW) and DC fast charging (up to 50kW). Additionally, mobile charging services, such as Power Up Tech, provide on-the-go solutions for emergencies, offering up to 80% charge when traditional stations are inaccessible.

  • Charging Station Availability: The number and location of charging stations significantly influence the practicality of owning an EV. Compatibility with charging networks can vary by brand; for example, some EVs may not work with all fast-charging stations. Buyers should check the compatibility of their EV with nearby stations, especially for longer trips or areas with fewer stations.

As an added incentive, Singapore is actively enhancing its EV infrastructure, with the government targeting to deploy 60,000 EV charging points across the nation, including both public and private premises, by 2030. We can expect a significant boost in the number of EV charging stations in public housing areas, with plans to make every Housing and Development Board (HDB) town EV-ready by 2025. Initiatives such as the EV Common Charger Grant have been introduced to facilitate the installation of shared charging infrastructure in non-landed private residences, supporting the widespread adoption of EVs.
